Java, June 18, 2019:

At least 17 people were killed after a passenger boat capsized off the waters of Java island in Indonesia, officials said on Tuesday.

The authorities said 39 passengers were rescued while one person was officially listed as missing after the boat capsized in rough waters off Sumenep in Madura island late Monday.

The ferry that was sailing from Raas Island to Sumenep port capsized due to bad weather, an official from the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) told Efe News.

He said the vessel was used on routine basis by the miners who would use it to travel between the two islands for work.

Marine accidents are common in Indonesia. Earlier this month, 17 crew members of a cargo vessel were killed while one survived by floating for four days, after their boat overturned off the coast of Sulawesi island.

Boat is an effective and the favorite transport means in the vast-archipelagic nation, but crews have often not fully lived up to the safety standard, which endangers the journey at sea.
