MUMBAI: Over 22 bodies of COVID-19 patients were piled into a single ambulance to carry them to a crematorium in Maharashtra's Beed district.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the bodies were being transferred for the last rites from the Swami Ramanand Teerth Rural Government Medical College mortuary in Ambajogai in Beed.

Citing a shortage of medical transport vehicles as the cause of the action, Dr. Shivaji Sukre, Dean of the medical college, said that during the first phase of COVID-19 last year, they had five ambulances.

Three of them were then withdrawn, and the hospital is now managing the transportation of COVID-19 patients with just two ambulances.

"Bodies from the Lokhandi Sawargaon village COVID-19 center are also sent to our facility because they lack cold storage," the official explained further.

He further stated that on March 17 last, they had also written to the district administration requesting three additional ambulances.

Meanwhile, Suresh Dhas, a BJP MLC, said that the hospital and the local civic body were blaming each other.

According to reports, 14 of the 22 people died on Saturday, while the others died on Sunday.

Ravindra Jagtap, the Beed district collector, said, "I've asked the Ambajogai additional collector to look into the matter. We will take measures against anyone who is found to be responsible."
