26 MPs from Myanmar are taking refuge in Mizoram capital Aizawl

AIZAWL: The chief minister of Myanmar‘s Chin state, Salai Lian Luai, is among more than 9,200 people who have taken refuge in Mizoram following a military coup in Myanmar. Salai Lian Luai along with other Myanmar nationals crossed the international border and entered Indian territory on Monday night, police said. They reach Champhai District in Mizoram.

A reliable source informed InsideNE that 26 MPs from Myanmar -- mostly from the Chin state -- are taking shelter in an undisclosed camp in the state capital Aizawl, along with 263 other refugees.

According to the data, a total number of 1,633 people have taken refuge in the state capital alone.

Meanwhile, Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday said that the Mizoram government has sanctioned money for relief operations for Myanmar refugees in the state.

The chief minister earlier had an interaction with office bearers of the largest NGO in Mizoram, Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA), regarding providing relief to Myanmar. The NGO leaders had requested the CM to intervene in the matter.

So far, The Myanmarese nationals who seek refuge in Mizoram are being looked after by civil societies, NGOs, and student bodies. A charity drive earlier had also been organized in aid of the refugees in the capital Aizawl.

Chin, a state in Western Myanmar, shares its vast and porous western border with Mizoram.

The Myanmarese who have fled from the military torn Myanmar since the military coup number at least nine thousand in Mizoram.

The Myanmar nationals currently in Mizoram are mostly from Chin Community as the Chin clan are related to the Mizo community.
