Arunachal police busts bike theft gang; 3 KTMs seized

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh's capital police busted a bike lifting gang, arresting 7 lifters from neighbouring Assam and capital Itanagar. Eleven bikes and scooters -- mostly of the 'sports' variety -- have been seized from the lifters.

After the frequent report of two-wheeler theft cases in the twin city, Capital Police led by SI N. Nishant under the supervision of the SDPO of Itanagar Kamdam Sikom and SP Jimmy Chiram, IPS, busted the gang that was mainly active in Itanagar area.

After the opening of a new police station in Chimpu on August 14, as many as 7 cases of two-wheeler theft were reported and registered at creating havoc among the denizens.

Last week, a minor boy was apprehended by local people for his alleged involvement in a two-wheeler theft case. After this incident, Chimpu police personnel started scanning the activities of lifters.

In the last couple of days, the Chimpu police station team recovered 11 two-wheelers from the Assam-Arunachal area.

The team has arrested 3 persons from Balijuri who are suspected to be involved in dealing in the selling of stolen vehicles. Four have been discovered to be juveniles and have been penalized as per J.J. Act.

The team has so far recovered 11 two-wheelers -- including 3 KTM sports bikes -- from locations such as Balijuri, Tinkhuti, Seijosa, Biswanath Chariali, Itanagar, etc.

After the recovery of these vehicles, 4 cases of Chimpu station and 3 cases of Itanagar station have been solved in a row whereas efforts are being made to ascertain the identity of the owners of other recovered vehicles. The number will increase in the coming days as some of the stolen vehicles are yet to be recovered and will be updated accordingly.

The modus operandi in most of the cases has revealed -- the culprits stole the bikes from Chimpu- Itanagar area and disposed of it in Seijosa and its adjoining area of Assam overnight at a very cheap rate.

Surprisingly, most of the bikes cost between Rs 1.5 lakhs to 2 lakhs, but they used to sell between Rs.1000 to Rs.3000/- per bike.

It has also been revealed that these vehicles were stolen from open spaces where they were supposedly parked without any proper security and lifters took it very easily from the spot.

Itanagar police have said that in the coming days, checking of vehicles in the city will be more intensified and defaulters will be punished as per law.

"Citizens must be extra cautious while parking their two-wheelers as lifters admitted that it took only one to two minutes to break the handle lock and steal these bikes. Bikes such as expensive KTMs have been sold for pennies in the black market," an official said.
