GUWAHATI: To ensure a free and fair election, as many as 320 companies of security forces have been deployed in the third and final phase of polling for the Assam assembly elections tomorrow.

The companies comprise Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), state armed police (SAP) from Assam and other states.

A total of 30 companies will be manning the strong rooms while the remaining will be engaged in law and order duties.

One constable and one home guard will be deployed in each polling station to maintain law and order.

Moreover, sector and zonal police officers will monitor the security situation in the state.

A total of 79,19,641 voters, including 40,11,539 male, 39,07,963 female and 139 transgenders, will exercise their franchise at 11,401 polling stations, including 1814 auxilaries, in 40 constituencies of 16 districts to seal the fate of 337 candidates, including 25 women.

Sporadic incidents of violence and reports of EVM malfunctioning and voter discrepancy marked polling during the second phase of elections.

On the other hand, photograph and video of electronic voting machine (EVM) transported in the car of the BJP candidate from Patharkandi Krishnendu Paul surfaced after polling concluded in the second phase.

At least three persons were injured in police firing at polling booth in Sonai constituency in Cachar district on the poll day on April 1.

The presiding officer was issued a show cause notice "for violation of the transport protocol" and was suspended along with three other officials.
