37 People in Tripura Kept Under Isolation for COVID-19, None Tested Positive: Tripura CM Biplab Deb

Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who also holds the health portfolio on Friday said that no confirmed cases of coronavirus infection (COVID-19) was reported in the state so far and the situation is under close monitoring.

In Tripura alone, altogether 37 people were kept under isolation after initial screening. They were under observation in the isolation ward of GB Hospital. In the report, all 37 cases were found to be negative, the Chief Minister told the media.

He also cautioned the rumor mongers adding that any kind of attempt to spread rumor would merely invite legal action. He also appealed everyone to visit nearest healthcare institutions in case of any symptoms like cold cough and fever. Addressing the media, the Chief Minister also said that leaflets having awareness notes on the preventive measures in local language would be distributed in various parts of the state to raise awareness among the citizens.

The Chief Minister appealed people not pay heed to the rumors being spread and assured that ‘there was nothing to panic’.

“Several medical teams have already been pressed into action at various entry points like Airport, Railway stations and Check Posts for screening of travelers. Besides, there are arrangements of special isolation wards at GBP and TMC hospitals,” he said.

Addressing a hastily convened press conference at the civil secretariat on Friday night, the Chief Minister said provision of Epidemic Disease Act-1987 was enforced in Tripura so that any measure can be taken at any place to prevent the spread of coronavirus. He said that the Act was enforced to make emergency services by doctors and medical staff mandatory if any such situation arises. He also said that all the District Magistrates (DMs) were put on alert.

The border has been sealed except Akhaura Integrated Check post and special teams have been formed in the state since January 28 to monitor a possible outbreak of the COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 continues to wreak havoc across the world.

Canada shut down Parliament and advised against all nonessential travel outside the country while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau governed remotely from his home, in self-imposed quarantine after his wife tested positive for the new coronavirus. Dr. Theresa Tam, the chief public health officer, also advised more social distancing, no handshakes and kisses.

The Pakistan government, meanwhile, has taken a number of steps to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, including closing the western borders with Iran and Afghanistan and banning all large public gatherings, as the number of confirmed cases has increased to 28 in the country.

Meanwhile, Italy, the second-worst hit country, has recorded 250 deaths yesterday, which is a record high. Meanwhile, the virus has claimed as many as 5,436 deaths worldwide, and 67,889 people are currently affected. 6,082 (or 9%) are said to be in serious/critical condition.
