GUWAHATI: Assam Congress MP of Rajya Sabha Ripun Bora has detailed unemployment in India and slammed the Narendra Modi led government for its adverse impact on the economy.

"Chief among the many promises made by PM Modi and the BJP during the 2014 election was providing government employment and self-employment opportunities to 2 crores unemployed youth every year. Instead, the rate of unemployment in India at present is the highest during the last 45 years," said Bora.

Bora also held the government's demonetisation, DST and poorly planned lockdown move responsible for the prevailing unemployment situation in India.

Citing the data released by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Bora informed that in the last seven years of the Modi government, the public sector witnessed a decrease of 4,71,306 jobs.

"Inbetween 2017 and 2021 as many as 53,000 women lost their jobs in different government departments. What kind of women empowerment the BJP talks about when this many women had to lose their job?" Bora asked.

Bora also said there are nine lakh posts are lying vacant in the civil department, as many as 2.5 lakh vacancies are in the Railways and 72,000 posts lying vacant.

Bora also cited an RTI report and called the condition of the public sector under the Modi regime is "sorry".

"In 2014 profit by public sector enterprises was Rs 88,000 crores which have come down to Rs 26,104 crores in the year 2021," Ripun Bora added.

Data revealed by Ripun Bora showed that not a single number of public sector enterprises were created during Modi's regime whereas the government has sold/privatised 23 public sector enterprises.

The market value of all public sector enterprises in India is Rs 13 lakh crores while the market value of Reliance industries is Rs 15 lakh crores, he said.

Bora also accused the Modi government of indiscriminately and forcefully spending the profits and additional savings of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), not being able to control foreign debts which is devastating the economy and for downward spiralling purchasing power and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as well.
