NEW DELHI: As many as 551 dedicated pressure swing Adsorption (PSA) medical oxygen generation plants will be built within public health facilities around the country to increase the production of the life-saving gas, which is in short supply in several states dealing with the COVID-19 outbreak.

The PM Cares Fund has granted in-principle approval for the allocation of funds for their installation, according to the PMO, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordering that these plants be operational as soon as possible.

He claims that these plants would significantly increase oxygen supply in the district level.

These dedicated plants will be built in designated government hospitals in district headquarters across various states and union territories, with procurement handled by the Health and Family Welfare ministry.

Earlier this year Rs 201.58 crores were allocated Under the PM Cares Fund for the construction of an additional 162 dedicated PSA medical oxygen generation plants within public health facilities across the world, according to the PMO.

It stated that the primary goal of developing PSA oxygen plants at government hospitals in district headquarters is to improve the public health system by ensuring that each of these hospitals has a captive oxygen generation facility.

Furthermore, the liquid medical oxygen (LMO) will act as a supplement to the captive oxygen generation, according to the statement.

Such a scheme will go a long way in ensuring that government hospitals in districts do not experience unexpected disruptions in oxygen supply and have continuous access to it in order to treat COVID-19 patients and other patients who need such assistance.

With over 3,00,000 new COVID-19 cases recorded daily in the last past few days, India is experiencing a second phase of the pandemic, and hospitals in many states are suffering from a lack of medical oxygen and beds.

Several hospitals in Delhi are suffering from a serious lack of medical oxygen.

Although several hospitals have made short-term plans, there is no end in sight to the crisis.
