GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has tweeted that six Assam police personnel were killed in their attempt to maintain the status quo in disputed areas along Assam's border with Mizoram.

"I am deeply pained to inform that six brave jawans of @assampolice have sacrificed their lives while defending constitutional boundary of our state at the Assam-Mizoram border. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families," CM Sarma tweeted.

There were reports of firing from the border area -- which lies over Assam's Cachar district and Mizoram's Kolasib district -- and attacks on government vehicles.

According to reports, around 60 Assam police battalion jawans have been injured in the skirmish and around 50 have been admitted to the medical college in Silchar.

According to reports, Home Minister Amit Shah is in touch with the chief Ministers of both the states amid the escalating tensions in the volatile areas. Police forces from both states have reportedly returned from disputed site.

Earlier in the day, the Mizoram CM and the Assam CM clashed on Twitter over the violence in the disputed areas.

More details are awaited.
