73.44 lakh voters to seal fate of 345 aspirants in phase II of Assam polls tomorrow

GUWAHATI: A total of 73,44,631 voters will exercise their franchise in the second phase of Assam assembly election to be held tomorrow. Polling will start at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm.

Out of the total voters in this phase, 37,34,537 are male and 36,09,959 are female voters, while 135 are third gender voters. Moreover, 17,164 service voters are registered in this phase of election.

There are 345 candidates, including 26 women, are in the fray. Fate of the four ministers and the deputy speaker of the Assam assembly will be sealed in this phase.

Polling in this phase will be held in 39 assembly constituencies spread across 13 districts of the Barak Valley, three hill districts, and parts of central and lower Assam. The Barak Valley has 15 seats in the 126-member state assembly.

Polling will take place in 10,592 polling stations. It includes 556 all-women polling stations. A total of 310 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) companies will be deployed to maintain law and order during the polls.

The districts going to polls in the second phase are Karimganj, Hailakandi, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Karbi Anglong, Karbi Anglong West, Kamrup Rural, Nalbari, Udalguri, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and Darrang.

The constituency with the highest number of electors in this phase is Hojai. It has 373 polling stations and 2,65,886 voters. The constituency having the lowest number of electors is Howraghat in Karbi Anglong district with 195 polling stations and 1,32,339 electors.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is contesting in 34 seats and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in six and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) in three, with friendly contests in four constituencies -- two each with the AGP and the UPPL.

On the other hand, Congress is contesting in 27 and its ally All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) in eight and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) in four.

Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) is contesting in 17 seats while 174 independents are also in the fray.
