AGARTALA: In a shocking incident reported from Tripura’s South district, a 76-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly raping his 9-year-old neighbour.
Manoranjan Das, the accused, used to work as a temporary employee at the ‘Rubber Board of India’ and lives just 50 metres from the minor’s house, police said.
According to police, the accused summoned the girl on Friday when she was walking in front of his house searching for her mother.
In the absence of his family members, the accused allegedly sexually assaulted her as she entered the building.
After the girl’s mother filed a report about the incident on Saturday, the police sprung into action and arrested the man.
“The mother of the minor girl filed a complaint with us. We arrested him on Saturday evening based on the complaint,” Soumya Debbarma, a Belonia sub-divisional police officer, said.
Das have been booked under section 376(AB) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
