80 Nagaland-Bound Dogs Rescued in Assam

Golaghat, July 1, 2019:

Smuggling of animals has become quite commonplace in Assam (with daily reports of cattle-smuggling along the Indo-Bangladesh border), and the smuggling of dogs from Assam to neighboring states is an common trend.

Recently, the locals in Golaghat district of Assam banded together to rescue eighty canines who were being taken to Dimapur in Nagaland state (allegedly to be sold in the dogmeat market there).

The dogs were being ferried in a TATA Ace vehicle with registration number AS 03 BC 7211 was carrying 80 dogs from Dergaon town in Assam to Dimapur, when some concerned locals intercepted the vehicle and rescued the dogs.

The vehicle came to the locals' notice after the vehicle accidentally hit a youth, after which some locals surrounded the vehicle upon investigating, found out that dogs were being smuggled in that vehicle.

Borpathar police apprehended one of the smugglers, Deb Narayan, along with the dogs. Four other smugglers managed to flee.
