Assam records 2,384 fresh COVID cases; caseload mounts to 2.33 lakh

GUWAHATI: Assam's COVID-19 tally today went up to 2,33,453 as the state reported this year's highest single-day spike of 2,384 fresh cases.

Kamrup (M) district recorded the highest number of 883 new cases, followed by Kamrup 159, Dibrugarh 154 and Nagaon 100.

On the other hand, 12 new fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 1,172, while 1,347 patients have died so far due to other reasons.

Kamrup (Metro) reported five deaths, Kokrajhar two, while Dibrugarh, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup and Udalguri districts recorded one death each.

The state now has 12,595 active cases, while 2,18,339 people have so far been cured of the disease, including 348 today, taking the recovery rate among the coronavirus patients to 93.53 per cent.

Assam tested 72,405 samples today taking the total COVID-19 tests conducted in the state to 81,71,361.

A total of 15.46 lakh people have been administered the first dose of the vaccine, while 4.02 lakh people have received the second dose.

Earlier in the day, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal took stock of the COVID situation in Central Assam districts of Nagaon, Hojai and Morigaon, and asked the district administrations to ensure safety and speed in rolling out of the third phase of vaccination drive from May 1.

Reviewing the COVID situation in the state with particular emphasis on the three districts at the Circuit House here, Sonowal asked the deputy commissioners (DCs) to generate total awareness among the people towards vaccinations and tests.

He also asked them to monitor the availability of oxygen in their respective territories. Sonowal also took stock of the available health infrastructure to contain COVID infections in the districts.

Meanwhile, the state health department today issued a new set of protocols for the discharge of COVID-19 patients after recovery from the disease.
