Guwahati, January 21, 2019:

The All Assam Moran Students’ Union (AAMSU) have continued protests in order to pressurize the BJP government to grant ST status to the community. Starting Sunday onwards, the student body has also organized an economic blockade in Assam’s Tinsukia district.

The union has four main concerns which they expect to bring to the attention of the BJP high command.

Firstly, they seek the grant of ST status and privileges to the Moran community.

Secondly, they demand the scrapping of the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016.

Thirdly, they demand the privatization of oil fields to be abolished.

Fourthly, they demand that PRC (Private Resident Certificate) being given to Moran people living in Arunachal Pradesh.

Moran Sabha Secretary Dharmendra Neog has appealed to the Government to grant ST status to the community. “We have been forced to come here to attract the attention of the state as well as central governments”, he said. He also warned that the one-month strike could be extended indefinitely if the demands are not met.

“Moran community must be given ST status and given their rightful privileges. If not, we will be forced to resort to violence. The government had promised us ST status, so our community had voted for the BJP, so we are demanding the government to grant us ST status. Moreover, the Moran student community shall never accept the influx of Bangladeshis into the state as planned by the government. Thus, we also demand that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 be scrapped”, stated a Moran student union leader.
