AASU Calls for 3-Day 'Satyagraha' against Citizenship Amendment Act

Guwahati, December 15, 2019:

The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) that is the leading student body in the state of Assam has called for a 3-day Satyagraha as a mark of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act that was recently passed in both Houses of Parliament.

“We will not accept a single migrant beyond 1971”, Samujjal told a huge gathering of Assamese nationalists who had gathered at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) to jointly demand the scrapping of the C(A)A.

Issuing a warning to Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and his Cabinet of Ministers, Samujjal stated that the power corridors of Dispur should pay heed to the collective angst of the people

Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who is the General Secretary of the student body, informed Inside Northeast that the main motive behind this Satyagraha is the immediate scrapping of the contentious Bill.

Lurin said: "We will be conducting statewide programs in all the districts of Assam on December 16, 17, and 18. The main intention of the program is to create awareness among the people regarding the threats of the C(A)A. Tomorrow, we are organizing a programme at the Latasil playground."

It may be mentioned that the AASU, known for its active role in the Assam Agitation (1979-1985) has been spearheading protests against the controversial legislation since it was passed in both Houses of Parliament.

Meanwhile, the AASU filed a case challenging the contentious Citizenship Amendment Bill at the Supreme Court on Friday.

AASU chief advisor Samujjal Bhattacharya made the announcement about the development during an 11-hour-long hunger strike at Assam Engineering College (AEC) playground, which was attended by over 50,000 people.
