Guwahati, November 22, 2019:

Former Chief Minister of Assam, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) is more important for him than the Asom Gana Parishad’s (AGP) newly formed Asom Chatra Parishad.

Mahanta, who is also an integral part of AGP, said that he would have preferred to skip the launch of Asom Chatra Parishad even if he were invited to the function.

He added that AASU was more important for him. While addressing a press conference, Mahanta also said that the leaders of AGP should speak on the ongoing issue of Citizenship Amendment Bill. He went on to say that there should be no compromise in this matter.

It may be mentioned here that the Asom Chatra Parishad was officially launched on Thursday in Guwahati’s Kalakshetra. Its formation has started a new chapter in Assam student politics.

AGP President and Agriculture Minister, Atul Bora said that the new party was a result of many discussions held over the past years regarding the requirement of a new students’ organisation.

The motive of AGP behind starting its own students’ union is to attract new future leaders and build a stronger regional presence. The formation of Asom Chatra Parishad is seen as an interesting turn in regional politics of Assam.

Earlier, AASU leaders would go on to join the regional party, however, the AGP launching its own student wings suggests that cracks are starting to form in the long-standing relationship between the AGP and Assam’s most-influential student body, the AASU.
