GUWAHATI: All Assam Students' Union (AASU) activists across Assam today took to the streets to protest against Sarbananda Sonowal, the chief minister of the state, for alleged atrocities against AASU members.

Sonowal's effigies were burnt by the activists of the AASU to register their protest against the brutal attack on AASU members at Tezpur and Sualkuchi by Assam Police personnel.

The AASU -- which has been carrying out protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the draft EIA -- has been met with stiff resistance by the police. Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state, members of the AASU took out mass protests to demand the cancellation of the Citizenship Amendment Act. Security personnel sprung into action, detaining protesters and stalling the protests. Ever since then, the students' body has been staging protests against the alleged brutality of Assam cops.

AASU activists also gathered in Margherita town to register their protest against the Chief Minister.

While they were burning an effigy of chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, police arrived on the scene and doused the effigy and threw it into a drawn.

Chintu Gogoi, the President of the Margherita AASU unit stated that the attack on AASU members is a blow to Sarbananda Sonowal himself only.

"Democracy is under threat under the régime of BJP led Government at Assam where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is leading the role of Hitler," he added.
