Guwahati, September 2, 2019:

Aero warrior Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, who was recently awarded a Vir Chakra, has returned to the cockpit of a MiG-21 jet after six long months. This time, he was joined by Air Chif Marshal BS Dhanoa.

The air chief, Dhanoa, who is also a MiG-21 pilot, is well-renowned for destroying Pakistan supply dumps along the Line of Control (LoC) during the 1999 Kargil war

It may be mentioned here that a MiG-21 Bison flown by Wing Commander Abhinandan had shot down an F-16 jet of the Pakistani Air Force in an aeriel dogfight in February.

The air battle took place during the tense relations between India and Pakistan, a day after India's Mirage 2000 jets crossed the Line of Control and bombed a Jaish-e-Mohammed camp in Balakot. This was in retaliation against a suicide attack, orchestrated by a JeM cadre, that killed 40 soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama.

Abhinandan's MiG-21 crashed in Pakistan, after which he was taken captive. However, he was released after two days in captivity by Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, as a gesture of peace.

After his release, Abhinandan had become the face of the military confrontation between India and Pakistan in February. The Wing Commander was recently cleared to fly after treatment for injuries sustained in action.
