The ABSU members submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner demanding checking of governing rules for running of the paying guests, check security measure available in the paying guests, installation of CCTV at necessary places (from security point of view), maximize Police personnel and to use advance investigation equipments to trace out the culprits, and stop giving permission to hold Melas.

Speaking on the matter, ABSU general secretary, Swmdwn Brahma said, “There are PGs and hostels in Kokrajhar and a lot of students stay here so we are concerned about their safety as the women related crimes have been increasing. We have requested the administration to look into this matter. It’s the time of festivals and often in these events, drugs, alcohol and other activities are carried out. We have submitted an MoU to DC Partha Pratim Mazumdar.”

“There should also be CCTV in the PGs to ensure security. Only then, in the long run, the anti-social elements will fade away from Kokrajhar. On Aug 12 an unidentified person had entered a Girls’ PG at night and made some videos giving a hint that women related crimes have been incread=sing in the district,” he added.

In the memorandum, it has been mentioned that many events like attacking the girls and women by breaking through the houses at Kokrajhar Town and committing rare sexual crimes have been reported frequently.

Unfortunately, it is to be mentioned that on August 12, 2019, at H. Villa Paying Guest at Baganshali, at midnight, some unidentified miscreants entered the room by breaking the ventilation and surprisingly, made some sexual videos of the girls while they were asleep.

After that incident, a lot of apprehensions has emerged in the mind of the common people as to the safety and security of any girl staying in any paying guest at Kokrajhar town.

Further, it is stated in the memorandum, “Un-Seasonal Melas, in the name of Pujas, Musical Nights, DJs, Cultural Programmes and etc. has been organized, one after another at various places, causing unnecessary wastage of time and money to the student communities without having regard to the interest of the students. This creates intolerable public noise to the residents of adjacent places of Melas which may also become the nuisance for the students during their study.”

“The selling and extensive use of intoxicating substances, by youths of tender age are found within the Mela premises posing trouble for their physical and mental health resulting in poor concentration in their study. The scene of riding bike with over-speed by the school going children on public road is seen frequently around the Mela premises causing inconvenience to the passers-by and many unnoticed anti-social and criminal activities crept in during these Melas, inside and outside the Mela premises that do not come under the direct notice of police and society,” it added.
