GUWAHATI: The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has introduced a new cricket tournament for women cricketers of the state.
Christened as Kanaklata Barua Inter-Zonal State Women’s Cricket Championship, the tournament will be held among teams from all the six zones of the state.
The zones are Headquarters, Southern Assam, Northern Assam, Upper Assam, Lower Assam and Central Assam.
The tournament will be held a ACA Stadium here from February 8 to 14.
The women’s selection committee, headed by Nazreen Ahmed, has selected 90 women players from across the state to participate in the tournament. Each team will comprise 15 players.
“The tournament has been aimed at giving an impetus to women’s cricket in the state,” said an ACA statement.
Kanaklata Barua was a freedom struggle martyr who was shot dead by the British police while trying to hoist the Indian flag at Gohpur police station in Biswanath district.
