KOHIMA: Extension of the controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has drawn flak from the Naga Hoho, the apex body of tribes in the Northeast Indian state.

Issuing a statement, Naga Hoho president H.K. Zhimomi said, "The Naga Hoho is extremely shocked by the attitude of the Govt. of India for ignoring the voice of the Naga people as a whole. It is a direct challenge and a message from the Government of India to keep on crushing the inalienable rights of the Nagas. If India is truly a democratic country, then the voice of the people should have been heard. Whereas, on the contrary the dignity and rights of the Naga people is simply not respected neither considered as fellow human beings." Accusing the Indian government of ignoring "the pain and cry of the Naga people", he said that the extension of AFSPA for another 6 (six) months in Nagaland in the midst of the people protesting against the inhuman act of is nothing but an act to dehumanise the Naga people.

The Naga Hoho in its statement has called upon the every Naga people across borders to stand in united voice and be prepared for any eventuality in the days to come.

"Our identity and our lives cannot be compromised in the hands of the Indian security forces but to stand up for our God given rights. We will decide our destiny but not by the Government of India," the statement read further.

Amid a chorus for the AFSPA's repeal in view of the massacre of unarmed civilians in Mon district on January 4 and 5, the Centre yesterday extended it by another 6 months.

In a notification, the Ministry said “the Central government is of the opinion that the area comprising the whole of the State of Nagaland is in such a disturbed and dangerous condition that the use of armed forces in aid of the civil power is necessary.”

It added that in exercise of powers conferred under Section 4 of the Act, “the Central government hereby declares that whole of the State of Nagaland to be ‘disturbed area’ for a period of six months with effect from 30th December, 2021, for the purpose of the said Act.”
