Aizawl, April 25, 2019:

In a sensational incident, eight suspected Rohingya women were apprehended in Mizoram. The suspected Rohingyas were apprehended while traveling on a bus headed from Silchar to Aizawl by authorities during a search operation late on Tuesday night.

Vairengte check gate authorities apprehended the women during a routine checking operation and took them in for questioning due to suspicious behavior. They were taken in for lacking VISA or any other identification papers. InsideNE tried to reach out to the Vairengte authorities, but they are unavailable for comment as of now.

The apprehendees have been identified as Sharmila Nara, Atariza, Saanbhar, Sekhuh, Tazmi, Noorkhayas, Taiba, and Rubina.

It may be mentioned that five Rohingya women had been apprehended in neighboring state Tripura along with a broker on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned that the Rohingyas are an ethnic group, the majority of whom are Muslim, who have lived for centuries in the majority Buddhist Myanmar.

Currently, there are about 1.1 million Rohingya in the Southeast Asian country. They are not considered one of the country’s 135 official ethnic groups and have been denied citizenship in Myanmar since 1982, which has effectively rendered them stateless.

More to come.
