GUWAHATI: Angkita Dutta, senior youth Congress leader who contested from Amguri in the just-transpired election, is reportedly planning to leave the Congress party.

According to sources, Angkita is reportedly peeved because the Congress party did not assign any "star campaigners" to campaign for her in her home constituency.

Although Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi joined Angkita during the campaign, she reportedly feels that the lack of star power hurt her in this year's elections.

If Angkita were to leave the Congress, it would come as a huge jolt to the grand old party as she is one of the more dynamic and young leaders of the party that has been struggling with a leadership crisis after the demise of 3-time chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

The Congress is already said to be reeling after the exit of Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who is a strong voice in Upper Assam and has a strong connect with the tea tribe community. Kurmi has already been expelled by the Congress for his "anti-party activities."

She is the daughter of Late Anjan Dutta who was President of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee and a former minister.

Angkita is a Bachelor of Arts from Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. She completed LLB from Faculty of Law, Delhi University and did her Ph.D. in Human Rights from the Indian Institute of Human Rights in the year 2011.

Angkita Dutta first contested election in 2016 from the Amguri constituency and lost the battle against Prodip Hazarika from the AGP party. Angkita has served as Vice President of the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress.

Earlier this year, the BJP party buoyed by the entry of Ajanta Neog, a senior Congresswoman who was a part of the Tarun Gogoi-led Congress cabinet. Neog won from her Constituency Golaghat which was proving to be a difficult bastion for the BJP to crack.
