Guwahati, April 6, 2019:

Assam's biggest regional party, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), has found itself in the midst of a controversy yet again as shocking allegations have been made against the party. These allegations have been made by none other than the AIUDF's Dhing MLA Aminul Islam himself. The Dhing MLA has claimed that the party's top leaders including Atul Bora, Keshav Mahanta have begged the AIUDF to help the AGP candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta in Kaliabor during the ensuing elections.

In an exclusive interaction with InsideNE, the MLA said: "Since we are fielding candidates in Kaliabor, NPP President Conrad Sangma,  NPP's Abdul Aziz, independent candidate Jiten Gogoi, as well as Keshav Mahanta from the AGP had called me up to request support. Moni Madhab Mahanta, as well as Keshab Mahanta, had called me to beg for help."

Aziz has also said that the AGP President Atul Bora had requested the AIUDF to held the party's candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta in Kaliabor. "He (Atul Bora) told me to help the party and push our voters towards them", he said.

This revelation will come as a huge shock for supporters of the AGP party, which claims to represent the interests of the indigenous people. Meanwhile, the party's allies BJP has constantly accused the AIUDF for representing interests of the alleged Bangladeshi immigrants in the state.

With these accusations coming to light, it seems like the AGP party truly has shaken off its ideology in a mad thirst for power. Meanwhile, a question continues to linger over the party's stance regarding the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill as the party's pre-poll alliance with the BJP party throws into question the AGP's opposition to the same. Moreover, the BJP has announced plans to re-introduce the Bill after winning the elections.

Kaliabor will head to the polls during the first phase of voting on 11 April. AGP's candidate Moni Madhab Mahanta will seek to topple the incumbent MP, Gaurav Gogoi.
