Guwahati, 25 January 2019:

Amid the ongoing agitation against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, leaders of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) on Friday met Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma in his Tura residence and discussed in length the impact the bill will have on the indigenous people of Northeast states.

Present in the meeting were AGP President Atul Bora, Working President Keshab Mahanta, former minister Phani Bhushan Choudhury, General Secretary Birendra Prasad Baishya, Ramendra Narayan Kalita and Pradip Hazarika.

CM Sangma appreciated AGP’s stand on the Bill and said that all the Northeastern states should unite to oppose the Bill in this hour of need, which threatens the very identity of the indigenous people of these states.

The CM also reiterated that the Bill not only threatens the harmony and interest of indigenous people of Assam but the whole of Northeast.

During the meeting, Atul Bora slammed the state and central government for forcefully imposing the Bill on Northeast and ignoring the interest of the people. He further added that this Bill will break the Assam record and shatter the ongoing process of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.

The AGP president also asked the Meghalaya CM to lead this stand against the Bill along with the other states of Northeast.

Through the meeting, the leaders have paved a new way into the protest against the Bill and has hinted at a new uprising against the adamant BJP government.
