Guwahati, December 22, 2019:

Amid rumblings of a rift among the leadership of the party, former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta has alleged that the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) members did not let him speak on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

The former Assam CM said that the members did not care to listen to his suggestions and added that as a leader, he ought to know what was happening. “Sometimes I receive letters addressing me as the Adviser but they never listen to any of my advice. Honestly, even I don't know if I am actually the Adviser or not,” Mahanta stated at a press meet in Guwahati.

He added, “They did not let me and Brindaban Goswami speak on the issue of the Citizenship Act the last time we attended a meeting. Nowadays, they have stopped inviting us to a lot of meetings.”

Mahanta further alleged that the state government’s decision to give the Assamese language the status of State language was just another way to tempt the people and mislead them amid the mass protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) act. According to him, “this is to tempt the people of Assam and mislead them.”

Criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent remark on the Assamese people protesting in London, Mahanta said, “He (Modi) said that the people who staged a demonstration outside the High Command in London were Pakistanis. But all of them were Assamese. They are Indians. If a Prime Minister says such a thing, how can India move forward?"
