Ahead of Phase-II election in Assam, let's have a look at candidates' criminal records

GUWAHATI: After the conclusion of the Phase-I of the election, attention now turns towards the candidates who are in the fray in the Phase-II of the 5-yearly Assam elections.

Recently, the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Assam Election Watch analyzed the sworn affidavits of 345 candidates who will be contesting the polls in the second phase. Among these, 37 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves.

Among these, as many as 9 candidates have declared 'serious' criminal cases against themselves.

Among the candidates who have declared criminal cases against themselves, Congress' Siddeque Ahmed (Karimganj South) leads the list with 7 cases. Humayun Kabir (Assam Jatiya Parishad) with 6 cases and Aftab Uddin Laskar (Asom Gana Parishad) with 5 cases are second and third on the list.

Among the major parties, 11(32%) out of 34 candidates analysed from BJP, 5(18%) out of 28 candidates analysed from INC, 5 (71%) out of 7 candidates analysed from AIUDF, 2 (33%) out of 6 candidates analysed from AGP, 3 (16%) out of 19 candidates analysed from Assam Jatiya Parishad and One candidate each from AIFB, SUCI(C) and United Peoples Party Liberal have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Among the major parties, 10(29%) out of 34 candidates analysed from BJP, 3(16%) out of 19 candidates analysed from Assam Jatiya Parishad, 3 (43%) out of 7 candidates analysed from AIUDF, 2 (33%) out of 6 candidates analysed from AGP, 2 (7%) out of 28 candidates analysed from INC and One candidate each from AIFB, United Peoples Party Liberal and SUCI (C) have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Altogether 345 contestants, including four ministers and the deputy speaker, are in the fray for 39 constituencies going to polls in the second of the three-phased Assam Assembly elections on April 1.

Prominent candidates from the BJP include ministers Parimal Suklabaidya (Dholai), Bhabesh Kalita (Rangia), Pijush Hazarika (Jagiroad) and Deputy Speaker Aminul Haque Laskar (Sonai).

For the first phase of elections on March 27, there were 267 contestants in 47 constituencies, including Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal (Majuli).
