Airstrikes in Afghanistan's Kandahar; at least 82 Taliban terrorists killed

KABUL: At least 82 militants have been reported dead as warplanes pounded Taliban hideouts and positions in Afghanistan's Kandahar province, the insurgent group's former stronghold, according to sources.

The sorties began on Saturday night in parts of the restive Arghandab district.

In addition to killing 82 armed insurgents, including the Taliban's top leader, Sarhadi, two tanks and other vehicles belonging to the insurgents were destroyed, according to the sources.

According to sources, the clean-up operations backed by warplanes were still ongoing in parts of the troubled district, without elaborating on potential security personnel casualties.

Taliban rebels operating in Kandahar province have not yet responded to the airstrikes.

At least 35 Taliban militants were killed and 33 others were wounded in Afghan Army offensives in Faryab and Baghlan provinces earlier on Saturday, according to the Defense Ministry.

The Afghan Air Force carried out airstrikes on a Taliban base in Sarchakan village of Gurziwan district in Faryab, killing 26 militants and wounding 33 others.

Nine Taliban militants were killed in Baghlan after the Afghan National Army launched a special operation in the Dand-e-Shahabuddin locality.

Six Taliban divisional commanders were among the casualties, according to sources.

Several guns, ammunition, and vehicles were also destroyed during the offensives, according to the Ministry.

The militant group has not yet responded to the reports.
