Guwahati, February 12, 2020:

All Assam Students' Union (AASU) leader Lurinjyoti Gogoi, condemning All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA for claiming that Miya-Muslims and not Ahoms are "indigenous", claimed that his party was formed to protect the interest of foreigners in Assam.

Addressing the media, Gogoi said, "AIUDF was formed when the IMDT Act was scrapped. Thus, the party was formed to protect foreigners. This party is the protector of illegal immigrants, and thus, their MLA Aminul Islam is making such communal statements. Many issues are associated with this remark."

Questioning why the remark was made just ahead of the submission of a report to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord and the discussion on the socio-economic census of "indigenous" Muslims, Lurin said it was an attempt to foment communal tensions.

The main motive is to polarize along communal lines", Lurin said, adding that the MLA is trying to divide a unified Assam with communal statements. The AASU leader also urged the AIUDF MLA to study the Constitution before making such "baseless" and "uneducated" statements.

Meanwhile, the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP) supremo Palash Changmai has condemned the MLA's statement and demanded him to apologize.

"The Ahoms are one of the prominent communities of Assam and to make such a statement about the Ahoms is despicable. They have lived in Assam for several centuries."

"The Ahoms came from Yunnan province in Myanmar…it was never a part of India, and it is still not a part of India. If they are designated as indigenous, why can the people who came from undivided India not be called indigenous?", Islam had said in his controversial speech.

The AIUDF MLA, in his fiery speech, also claimed that the Brahmins came from Iran and Iraq. “If they (Brahmins) can be indigenous, why not Khilonjia Muslims?”, the AIUDF MLA questioned.
