GUWAHATI: The cash-strapped newly-floated Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) today launched a fund raising drive declaring that it would fight the Assam assembly elections with funding from the supporters.

Unlike other political parties, the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU)-backed party also fixed a minimum application fee of Rs 20,000 per head for those who would contest the elections of AJP tickets. The Assam assembly elections are scheduled tentatively in April.

“All those who want to contest from the AJP in the elections are requested to apply with Rs 20,000 each by February 25,” said AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi in a press conference here today.

He also said, “the AJP has been raised to serve the people and it would fight the elections with funding of the people. We will counter money power with people’s funding. The people of Assam are our wealth.”

The party also released its bank account number (59202020202111; IFSC Code - HDFC0000399) on the public domain to contribute funds for use in the electioneering. Gogoi said all the accounts of the funds raised and utilised would be uploaded every week on the party’s website to maintain transparency.

Claiming that the party was trying to reach out to every single supporter to learn their feelings ahead of the elections, Gogoi said the party has also introduced a toll-free phone number (1800-270-2626) for the people to register their grievances or suggestions to the party.

He also announced the launch of party website, https://sevak.assamjatiyaparishad.org/, to help supporters join the party by directly registering themselves on the website.
