GUWAHATI: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) today warned the BJP-led Centre against implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) 2019 or be ready to face "any consequences".

The All Assam Students' Union-backed new political party, floated on the anti-CAA plank, took exception to Union home minister Amit Shah's statement in the Parliament yesterday that CAA will be implemented after completion of COVID-19 vaccination.

Terming the CAA as a "more dangerous virus" for Assam than coronavirus, the AJP, in a statement, said if the BJP government implements CAA, it will face a "resilient unified agitation in Assam".

The regional party also appealed to the people to oppose the "unconstitutional step to dilute the secular fabric of the nation that will also take its toll on the right to equality of citizens." Describing the law as a "blueprint to devastate the Assamese society", the AJP has claimed that it did not stop in hitting the streets against the Act, but also launched a political movement and sought the support of the people towards the cause.

Further, the AJP expressed dismay over the BJP government failing to keep its promise of reviving the Nagaon and Cachar paper mills and favouring the liquidation of the two industrial units.

"The failure of the Sarbananda Sonowal government to impress upon the Centre to revive the paper mills shows that its is a very weak government that cannot stand by its people," the statement said.

The AJP also demanded immediate release of suspected Bangladeshi nationals who had migrated to Assam before 1971 from all detention camps of Assam.

The AJP today had a detailed discussion with representatives of minority communities, particularly the Bengali speaking population of Assam. The AJP categorically stated that all those who migrated to Assam before 1971 are accepted as part of the greater Assamese society under the provisions of the Assam Accord and there should not be any dispute over their nationality.
