GUWAHATI: After Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal today categorically refused to align with the Congress-All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) led six-party grand alliance ahead of the state assembly elections scheduled for April.

Grand alliance partner Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) representatives today called on jailed Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here today to propose a tie-up, only to be rejected by Gogoi. AGM leaders Manjit Mahanta and Lachit Bordoloi met Gogoi this afternoon.

The AGM, CPI, CPI (M) and CPI (M-L) are partners with Congress-AIUDF in the grand alliance.

Talking to the media, Mahanta said: “Akhil Gogoi has been incarcerated by the government with an undemocratic attitude. We paid him a courtesy visit at GMCH. We also proposed a tie-up with the grand alliance. He listened to our proposal, but did not give a positive response.”

“Under the current circumstances, a united fight of the regional forces can only dislodge the BJP from the seat of power in Assam. We have been constantly proposing a unified fight against the anti-people government. We are hopeful of an alliance at some point of time in the future,” he added.

The Raijor Dal and AJP, who have already announced an alliance, have been categorical in opposing alliance with any national party or any communal party. The two newly floated regional parties are also in contact with the Bodoland People’s Front and Autonomous State Demand Committee for an alliance.

Summing up the outcome of the meeting with Gogoi, Bordoloi said: “Although Gogoi did not respond positively to our proposal of a grand alliance of all regional forces, we are hopeful of a positive response from all regional parties in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Raijor Dal today officially launched its campaign for Gogoi at Sivasagar commencing a seven-day foot march of party workers in the upper Assam town. Gogoi is likely to contest from Sivasagar constituency.
