GOLAGHAT: All shops in parts of the Golaghat district will be closed for two days from tomorrow to curb the COVID surge.

In an effort to contain the spread of the infection, the district administration ordered the closure of all the shops and commercial establishments in the district on July 13 and 14.

However, selling milk and medical stores will remain open.

While milk and medical stores are allowed to remain open, all other establishments, including those selling fruits, vegetables, and groceries, will be shuttered in order to reduce human contact and break the viral infection chain.

The instruction said that anyone found violating COVID protocols would face severe consequences.

Therefore, the district administration has urged residents not to violate curfew rules and to help tackle the spread of COVID staying home.

In the past 24 hours, Assam reported  1,579 new cases of COVID-19 pushing the tally to 5,33,663.

Jorhat district reported the most cases, with 185, followed by Golaghat with 180, Kamrup Metro with 150, and Sonitpur with 103.

On the other hand, 16 more patients died due to the virus bringing the death toll to 4828.

The state currently has 19,972 active cases and 5,07,516 people have recovered from the infection.
