KOKRAJHAR: Union home minister Amit Shah today took a dig at the Congress rules in the past for failing to solve the insurgency problems in Assam and accused it of abetting violence in the state during its rule.

Addressing a rally at Green Field Bodosa Nwgwr here on the occasion of fiorst anniversary of Bodoland Territorial Region Accord Day celebrations, Shah said it was the Narendra Modi-led BJP government that ushered in peace in the Bodo belt of Assam. “A total of 700 members of eight armed outfits laid down arms after the Modi government took the initiative to solve the Bodoland political impasse,” he said.

The minister also said that the Centre was also giving final touch to the long pending Bru settlement issue in the Northeast.

“The signing of a BTR Accord was a clear indication that the Modi government is determined to solve all issues in the Northeast through talks and negotiations,” he said.

Shah alleged that the Congress abetted bloodbath in Assam by allowing the birth of many militant organisations because it could not ensure development and progress in the state.

“This rally is a reply to those who disturbed the peace in Assam by spreading venom in the name of Bodo and non-Bodo. Today, both Bodos and non-Bodos are present here … The Congress which could not solve problems and restore peace and progress, have no morale right to advise us,” he said.

“With peace restored, BTR will be the most developed region in Assam over the next few years … I assure you that every single clause of the BTR Accord will be implemented in letter and spirit. BJP will protect Bodo language, tradition and culture,” he added.

Shah further said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 500 crore for development of road connectivity in the BTR. Earlier, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government has last night cleared Rs 400 crore for development of roads and streets in the BTR area as a “goodwill package”.

Promising further development of the BTR, Shah, who also launched Rs 4 lakh each ex-gratia payment to former rebel martyrs, said: “We have won the semifinals (in the BTC polls) and I am sure, we will win the final as well.”

Assam chief minister Sarbanada Sonowal expressed gratitude to both Modi and Shah for the various initiatives the Centre took to ensure allround development of the Northeast and restoration of peace in the region. All the three leaders, however, carefully refrained from making any statement on the implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord or awarding Scheduled Tribe status to six communities of Assam which the BJP had promised to fulfill immediately after the 2016 elections.
