GUWAHATI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is all set to visit Assam on January 22, from where he will depart for Shillong to chair the plenary meeting of the North Eastern Council (NEC) a day later. He will again return to Assam on January 24 and address two rallies -- one in Kokrajhar and one in Nalbari.

"Mr. Shah will reach Assam's Guwahati on January 22; from there, he will go to Shillong where he will chair the NEC meet on January 23; a day later, he will reach Kokrajhar where a programme will be held to mark one year of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) Accord. From there, he will move to Nalbari to address and meet and leave for New Delhi after that," stated Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Northeast Democratic Alliance (NEDA) Convenor and BJP's go-to man in Northeast India.

Amit Shah will undertake a visit to West Bengal on January 30 and 31 and meet BJP leaders and workers in the poll-bound state.

In the 2016 assembly election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP did exceedingly well in Assam, winning 60 of the 126 seats on its own, and 86 in partnership with its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

If the BJP wins Assam again, it will mean Narendra Modi and Amit Shah’s gamble of pushing through with the Citizenship (Amendment) Act didn’t hurt them. At the same time, regional parties -- including the recently formed Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Raijor Dal -- are gearing up for the polls with the 'CAA' as the major poll plank.
