Congress MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh slams Meghalaya Govt over standoff with taxi drivers

SHILLONG: Senior Congress leader Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday slammed the National People's Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government over its failure to end the standoff with the Meghalaya Joint Action Committee of Commercial Vehicles (MJACCV), who are protesting against the fuel price rise in the state.

"I haven't seen a government which is hesitant to allow agitating groups for talks. The role of the incumbent government will further exacerbate the law and order situation. the people of the state have seen enough of bandh and agitations in the past." she said.

It is unfortunate that Shillong city once again experiences this kind of disruption of life. I feel there is merit in calling this road blockade, she said.

The increase in accumulated taxes on petroleum would have an effect not only on commercial vehicles but also on private vehicles, said the senior Congress legislator.

Pointing out that Assam reduced the price of fuel by Rs 5, Lyngdoh stated that that the public raising question on the need for Meghalaya to adopt a similar stand like Assam is valid.

Noteworthy is that the Congress MLA from East Shillong walked on foot to attend the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) to express her solidarity to the MJACCV and the public at large.
