GUWAHATI: Youth Congress leader Angkita Dutta, who had contested from Amguri LAC in the Assam assembly polls, had an emotional interaction with her well wishers today via her Facebook live after her defeat in the election.

“Last night I kept on thinking where did we miss out over the past five years? Did I work less or did I do anything wrong? I gave it a lot of thoughts but could not figure it out,” said Angkita very emotionally.

Addressing her party workers and supporters, Angkita said: “You all have given your best. I have given my best. As a leader, I am very proud of you all for the work you have put throughout.”

She added further: “I know how many of you have made sacrifices and how have you all took time out of your busy schedules.”

Dutta was fielded by Congress against Prodip Hazarika, incumbent Asom Gana Parishad MLA, who had been a tough competitor of Angkita’s father late Anjan Dutta as well.

Amguri LAC has a tradition of voting out the incumbent MLA from power every time since 1985, but that was broken by Hazarika this time by winning two consecutive terms against Dutta.

Whether be it for the tradition or the increasing popularity of youth leader Angkita, Amguri was presumed to be reclaimed by Congress this time. Not only exit polls but BJP state president Ranjeet Kr Dass also accepted the same.

But Angkita lost the election to Hazarika by a margin of 6,082 votes.

“This happens in politics. I am with you and always will be. After my father’s death, I have found my family in you all. We have got more votes this time than earlier because of your hard work,” said Angkita expressing her gratitude towards the workers.

Meanwhile, Angkita had said earlier that when ‘heavy-weight campaigners from the BJP were marching in her constituency, she felt all alone and cried for help from senior Congress leaders to send some star campaigners to back her. But when all her pleas went in vain, the Congress workers of Amguri had taken the charge and helped her in giving the desired fight.
