Barpeta, September 20, 2019:

A Pregnant woman was mercilessly beaten up by Amguri Police personnel in yet another incident of assault against pregnant women by Assam Police personnel. The latest incident has been reported from Lower Assam's Barpeta district.

The victim, Hukeya Khatun (25) was reportedly assaulted at her residence in Khudunabari village of Barpeta. She was carrying for two months but the pregnancy had to be terminated due to injuries sustained during the incident.

According to a local, the incident occurred around midnight. “Police just barged into their house as the door was left open, and kept beating the pregnant woman. They hit her because she took time to open the door,” he explained.

The local further added that her condition turned worse on the spot. “They did not stop even when the pregnant woman started bleeding,” he alleged.

Chirang’s Amguri Police personnel, allegedly, attacked seven other members of her family.

The incident happened on September 17 when the Police were in search of Sahidul Ali, a family member of the pregnant woman.

As per reports, Sahidul had eloped with a girl named Zainab Khatun. Her father had lodged a complaint in the Amguri Police Station. Failing to trace Ali, police personnel, allegedly, physically assaulted his family members.

Zainab Khatun admitted that she was in love with Sahidul and fled with him. “It was my wish to elope with the man I love,” she said.

It is to be noted that this is yet another incident shedding light on the barbarism of police personnel on pregnant women.

Earlier this week, a pregnant woman, along with her two sisters, were allegedly stripped and tortured in Burha Police Outpost in Assam’s Darrang district.

Police were in search of their brother and failing to find him, the Police had, allegedly, tortured them the whole night. The pregnant woman was carrying for two months and 22 days and her pregnancy also had to be terminated.

Locals and leaders have condemned such gruesome acts by police officials. The Burha Police Outpost case is yet to be solved and another incident has come up in Barpeta district by officials of the police department.
