Antarctica Records Hottest Temperature Ever at 18.3 Celsius

New Delhi, February 8, 2020:

Antarctica has recorded its hottest temperature of 18.3 Celsius (64.9 F) as per the reading on Thursday by the Argentine research base Esperanza.

Scientists recorded this temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, on the continent's north-west tip - one of the fastest-warming regions on earth.

The UN World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) has verified the information and viewed that the recorded temperature would not even be recorded during summers. The previous temperature was recorded at 17.5 Celsius in March 2015, which is 0.8 Celsius hotter.

“[This] is not a figure you would normally associate with Antarctica, even in the summertime,” BBC quoted the Spokesperson of WMO, Nullis. WMO also informed that the temperatures in Antarctica had risen by almost 3 Celsius over the past 50 years, and about 87 percent of the glaciers along its west coast have retreated in that time.

Global warming has been the cause behind the rising temperature. Scientists have warned that global warming has caused so much melting at the South Pole that eventually, it would lead to the rising of the global sea level by at least ten ft over the centuries.

According to reports, while 18.3 Celsius is a record for the Antarctic continent, the record in the wider Antarctic region, which includes the continent, islands and ocean that are in the Antarctic climatic zone, is 19.8 Celsius, recorded in January 1982.
