GUWAHATI: APCC President Ripun Bora on Friday slammed Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for calling Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee the proponent of the Assamese language in Calcutta University and said that it is a sheer insult to sons of Assam like Hem Chandra Barua, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan etc.

Recently during a meet in Barpeta, Himanta Biswa Sarma made the remark that Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was responsible for the introduction of Assamese language in Calcutta University.

Reacting to this remark, Bora said, "Perhaps Dr Sarma is not aware that prior to the establishment of Gauhati University many students from Assam used to go to Calcutta for higher studies and it was through the demand of the students that Assamese language was introduced in the curriculum of Calcutta University."

"Dr Sarma should be aware that the development of Assamese language happened through the untiring efforts of Hem Chandra Barua, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan, Gunabhiram Barua, Manik Chandra Barua, the American Baptist Missionaries and Arunodoi, Asomiya Bhasha Unnati Sadhini Sabha along with the stalwarts of the Jonaki Movement like Lakhsminath Bezbarua, Chandra Kumar Agarwala, Kamalakanta Bhattacharjya, Hemchandra Goswami, Dr Birinchi Kumar Barua", said Bora citing examples.

The APCC  president said that it is a matter of regret that the Chief Minister insulted the 'great sons of Assam' while trying to give credit to an 'undeserving' person like Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee for the development of Assamese language.

"It is a matter of shame that it was the same Dr Shyama Prasad  Mukherjee who had expelled a few students who had refused to salute the British Union Jack Flag in Calcutta University when he was the Vice-Chancellor", said Bora citing an incident from the history.

During the Quit India Movement, Dr. Mookerjee said in written that he would not support the movement, pointed out Bora.

"Dr Sarma's attempt to eulogise and sing praises of Dr Shyama Prasad Mookerjee who was actually a betrayer of the freedom movement and hence of India is a gross misinterpretation of historical facts", said Bora criticizing the Chief Minister.

Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday unveiled the statue of Bharatiya Janasangh founder Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee at Barpeta Road on the occasion of his 120th birth anniversary.
