Pasighat: The Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife sanctuary has issued a standing order to residents of fringe villages of the sanctuary at both banks not to indulge into destructive means of fishing using Inverter/Honda, poisoning of river and blasting.

As per the sanctuary’s DFO, Tasang Taga, the restrictions were already in place by the directive of the district administration but some people from certain selected villages were repeatedly found indulging in "destructive fishing” due to which the fish population of the sanctuary was largely affected.

Such destructive means of fishing has badly affected the aquatic ecosystem of the sanctuary as most of the Migratory birds of the sanctuary are dependent on the fish and aquatic life which are also a part of the wildlife of the sanctuary.

Taga also said that such illegal means of fishing in and around the D. Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary and its rivers are totally prohibited under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and to this effect,

the district administration has also already banned any kind of such illegal means of fishing like electrocution/blasting/poisoning etc under East Siang District.

The DFO said, “Anyone who is found to be indulging into illegal means of fishing inside the sanctuary shall invite punishment under Wildlife Protection Act of 1972 and other relevant sections of laws”

Meanwhile, radio announcements are also being made through All India Radio, Pasighat to create more public awareness on protecting the aquatic ecosystem of the sanctuary.

Traditional fishing methods are not banned, like fishing by using fishing nets, fishing trap ‘Edung-Esap, Gakar, Boroki, Edil, Porang’ (in local Adis) as fishing by traditional means and methods are not that destructive in comparison to the modern time fishing means like by electrocution, poisoning and blasting.

But the sanctuary management has urged the public not to put up any fishing camps near the sanctuary areas.
