Ashima Bordoloi, Mira Borthakur file nominations today

GUWAHATI: Congress’s last minute choices Ashima Bordoloi and Mira Borthakur filed their nominations on the last day of filing nominations for the Assam assembly elections 2021 today.

While Bordoloi filed her nomination from Guwahati East, Borthakur filed her nomination from Guwahati West. The two seats were contested unsuccessfully by Bobbeeta Sharma and Juri Sarma Bordoloi in the last election in 2016.

Bordoloi will face BJP bigwig Siddhartha Bhattacharya as her opponent, Borthakur will take on sitting MLA Ramendra Narayan Kalita of the Asom Gana Parishad.

Bhattacharya, who filed his nomination yesterday, mocked Congress candidate Bordoloi saying: “I feel pity that I’ll defeat Robin Bordoloi’s daughter by a huge margin.” A former minister Robin Bordoloi is the son of former chief minister Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi.

Apart from the two women candidates, at least two journalists – Adib Phukan and Manjit Mahanta – filed nominations today.

Phukan filed his nomination from Assam Jatiya Parishad for the Guwahati East constituency, while Mahanta, a nominee of the Anchalik Gana Morcha, a constituent of the grand alliance, filed his nomination from Dispur on a Congress ticket. Mahanta will face Atul Bora of the BJP as opponent.

All the four proceeded to the Kamrup (Metro) deputy commissioner’s office in rallies to file their papers.

BJP heavyweight Himanta Biswa Sarma filed his nomination in a carnival atmosphere with thousands of supporters taking out a rally.

Elsewhere in Chhaygaon, sitting MLA Rekibuddin Ahmed of Congress filed his nomination today. He will face former minister Kamala Kanta Kalita of the AGP, who filed his nomination yesterday.
