Asom Gana Parishad demands 'Inner Line Permit' in Assam

Guwahati, December 6, 2019:

The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), which is the largest regional party in Assam, has reiterated the demand for an Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.

The party submitted a charter of demands to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, where it urged the Centre to look into its set of demands to protect the rights of the 'indigenous people' of Assam. "Inner line permit must be introduced for entry of any person into Assam", the AGP stated in its list of demands.

Urging the Centre to implement the Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, the AGP stated that once it is done "the greater interest of the indigenous people of Assam will be protected." The party also urged to Home Ministry to delay the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, and stated that the indigenous people must be protected before such a Bill is brought.

The AGP further added that for more than 35 years, the people of Assam have been agitating to protect the language, culture, and socio-economic development of its people, and thus the Clause 6 of the Accord must be implemented to "preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic heritage and identity of the people of Assam.

The regional party also urged the Centre to reserve 100% posts in the Parliament as well as 100% Government jobs for the indigenous people of Assam.
