After receiving no response from the Assam government despite repeated contacts, as many as 12 students from Assam, who have been stranded in Chattishgarh amid the coronavirus pandemic, urged the state government to help them returning home.

“We are 12 here. We have filled up the form and also mailed to the Assam government to help us returning home. But unfortunately, it’s been more than two weeks, we have received no response from the government of Assam,” Nilakshi Borah told Inside NE.

The students are Madhu Ram Swargiary of Dighaldonga in Barpeta; Dhonen Brahma of Dwmwiupur in Sonitpur; Jiban Brata Narzary of Sukhajjora in Kokrajhar; Jhon Kumar Rabha of Amguri in Goalpara; Danswrang Narzary of Khasiachupa in Udalguri; Dipankor Kalita of Khaloibari in Kamrup; Shrutee Mazumder of Jyotinagar in Jorhat; Madhusmita Paul of Teachers’ Colony in Dhemaji; Parishmita Phukan of Bantow gaon in Lakhimpur; Nilakshi Borah of Lakhibari in Jorhat; Barkha Konwar of Ramugaon in Sivasagar and Lipika Devi of Bihaguri in Sonitpur.

Some of them are staying in the varsity hostel and some are staying on rent in Khairagarh. “Those, who are staying at the varsity hostels, have been asked to vacate soon,” she added.

All of them are studying music in the Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, a public university located in Khairagarh, Rajnandgaon district, in the state.

It may be mentioned that the Assam government has taken many initiatives to bring back the stranded people in different parts of the country via train and bus. Moreover, the Indian Railways today said that it will run 200 new non-AC trains from June 1 in addition to the existing Shramik Special trains.

The national transporter started operating 15 pairs of special Rajdhani trains May 12 onwards, in a gradual resumption of passenger train operations after seven weeks, owing to the Covid-19 outbreak in the country. Indian Railways has transported more than 21.5 lakh migrants to their home states through “Shramik Special” trains in 19 days and operate more than 1600 “Shramik Special” trains.
