Assam: 290 encroachment incidents since 2016; Nagaland accounted highest with 99 cases

GUWAHATI: The Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed on the Assam Legislative Assembly floor that as many as 290 cases of encroachment have occurred in the state's land by the neighboring states 2016.

The Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia has raised the question on the floor to CM Sarma, who is holding the home ministry portfolio as well, and it was submitted by Sarma in a written reply which has revealed the data on encroachment incidents.

According to the home ministry data, neighbouring state Nagaland has 99 incidents of encroachment, which is the highest among all the other neighbouring states.

Out of 99 cases of encroachment, Karbi Anglong reported 49, Sivasagar 36, Jorhat 9 and Charaideo 5.

Mizoram is responsible for 42 encroachment cases in Cachar (25), Hailakandi (16) and Karimganj (1) districts.

Meghalaya has 40 cases of encroachment against it in the districts of West Karbi Anglong and Kamrup (13).

Likewise, Arunachal Pradesh has caused 28 cases of encroachments in the districts of Dhemaji (9), Lakhimpur (8), Biswanath Chariali (7), Charaideo (2), Sadiya (2) and Tinsukia (1).

Three accused have been arrested so far for being involved in these cases of encroachment two from Nagaland in Charaideo and one from Meghalaya in Karbi Anglong.
