Assam: Over 69,000 hectares of state land illegally occupied by neighbouring states; Govt data

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government's official data has revealed that a total of 69,010.82 hectares of state lands are illegally occupied by encroachers from the neighbouring states.

In a written response to Congress legislator from Boko, Nandita Das, state Border Area Development minister Atul Bora stated that neighbouring states Arunachal Pradesh has encroached lands in the districts of Sonitpur (1.0849), Biswanath (4751.00), Lakhimpur (1975.41), Dhemaji (1055.7479), Dibrugarh (10.00) and Charaideo (602.0117) which accounts a total of 8395.2545 hectares of lands.

Nagaland encroached lands in Jorhat (18807.72), Sivasagar (23.9039), Golaghat (36294.07) and Charaideo (270.4357) districts a total of 55396.1296 hectares of lands.

Likewise, Meghalaya is responsible for encroaching 3441.8601 hectares of lands in the districts of Goalpara (33.8156), Cachar (602. 0117), Kamrup (802.6823), Salmara South-Mankachar (3.3505) and West Karbi Anglong (2000.00).

Mizoram is responsible for occupying 1777.58 hectares of Assam lands in the districts of Hailakandi (1000.00), Karimganj (377.58) and Cachar (400.00).

Minister Bora has informed that orders have been issued to Deputy Commissioners and Police Commissioners of the concerned districts to take appropriate action against the encroachers.

Discussions going on with Meghalaya and Mizoram on various levels to free the encroached lands from them and two cases have been lodged against Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh in Supreme Court regarding the same, said Bora.
