Kokrajhar, February 22, 2020:

Following the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) has raised its demand to release Ranjan Daimary, the leader who has been serving life imprisonment for the 2008 serial blasts in Guwahati.

Ranjan Daimary was granted bail on January 25 ahead of the signing of Bodo Peace Agreement on January 27. After the agreement was signed, the leader was sent back to serving his life sentence.

ABSU has requested the Governments of India and Assam “to reconsider the release of the President of NDFB Ranjan Daimary @ D.R. Nabla, who is one of the Signatory to the Accord.”

“ABSU appeals for the greater interest of the implementation and peace building process after the accord and giving the mark of respectable opportunity for the leadership of NDFB to join the mainstream after they have shun the path of armed struggle through the accord,” read a statement released by ABSU.

It may be mentioned here that ABSU’s appeal has come a day after the NDFB leaders sought Daimary’s release. On Friday, former NDFB (Progressive) president Gobinda Basumatary, who had earlier laid down arms along with 1615 cadres of the four NDFB factions, said, “We have filed a petition seeking Ranjan Daimary’s bail extension. His hearing was scheduled for February 20 but was postponed to February 25.”

Basumatary, on behalf of the NDFB group warned of democratic protests in the days to come if Daimary is not released soon.
