Moran, February 12, 2020:

Members of the All Tai-Ahom Students' Union on Wednesday burnt effigies of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party's MLA from Dhing, Assam, for his "Ahoms are not indigenous remark".

In Moran town under Assam's Dibrugarh district, the ATASU members condemned the MLA for his claimed and said that the MLA should learn the history of Assam first before making such "uneducated" remarks in public.

In Moran, the student body took to the streets along National Highway 37, and set fire to an effigy of the MLA while shouting slogans against his remarks.

"Ahom are not indigenous....they came from foreign lands...we are condemning this. We warn him not to make such statement against any community", said one of the agitators.

Aminul Islam, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA representing Dhing constituency in Assam’s Nagaon has gained notoriety for claiming that Ahoms are not indigenous to Assam, while saying at the same time that Miya-Muslims migrated from neighboring Bangladesh are the actual sons of the soil.

A video of his speech has gone viral on social media and has drawn condemnation from netizens as the Tai-Ahom tribe founded a dynasty that ruled over Assam for several centuries.

Now, Islam finds himself in the crosshairs of several indigenous organizations as well as political parties, with the people of Assam at large condemning his "communal" statement.
