Tinsukia: Unrest has continued in the Upper Assam Tinsukia district over the spike in prices of vegetables and other essential commodities. Over 50 protesters directed their wrath at Assam's Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Supplies Minister Phani Bhusan Choudhury.

The protest today was held in the GNB road in Tinsukia, in front of the AJYCP's regional headquarters. Members of the regional body took out a procession and burnt effigies of Sonowal and Choudhuruy in an expression of their distaste for the ruling dispensation.

These protesters, affiliated to the influential Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYCP), claimed that the Sarbananda Sonowal led BJP government has not taken any steps to provide relief to the people suffering due to this price rise.

"Because of the rising prices of commodities, people have become poor and some have even committed suicide. But the Sarbananda Sonowal-led Government is yet to take note of this and are busy indulging communal politics," one of the protesters told media.

Even as the prices of common commodities such as onions, potatoes have continued to soar across Assam, protests against this sudden 'price rise' has also become increasingly common.

In a meeting held yesterday, Assam CM Sonowal pointed out that the disparity in prices of items like potato, onion and vegetables in wholesale and retail markets. Sonowal has appealed the traders engaged in unfair practices not to do so.

Stating that the soaring prices of potato, onion, vegetables, eggs, cooking oils etc have impacted the common people adversely and caused strong resentment among them, Sonowal said that the Assam government cannot remain “inactive” in these dire times.

Assam CM Sonowal also said that ‘integrated dedicated teams’ would be set up by the State Government to keep tabs on the price rise of the essential items.

He also said that people have to be made aware of the prices of the vegetables so that they are not made to pay a higher price for these goods by unscrupulous businessmen.
