Assam: Army apprehends NSCN (IM) cadre in Tinsukia district

Troops of Indian Army in an operation apprehended one active cadre of NSCN (IM) near Ledo Town in Tinsukia District of Assam on Jul 30. Based on a specific input the troops launched an operation and apprehended the cadre from the area.

It is suspected that the individual was actively involved in extortion and recruitment activities in Ledo and Margherita. The troops also recovered one Point 22 Pistol (USA made) along with four rounds of live ammunition and Rs 1830 cash from the possession of the individual.

Earlier, immediately after a specific input reached SP, Changlang office on Monday evening pertaining to the movement of the Revenue Incharge of NSCN (R) in the general area of Changlang town, a joint team of Changlang district police, 9th Assam Rifles and 149 Bn CRPF launched an operation and nabbed the cadre without any use of gunfire. He came to the town for carrying out extortion activities, SP Changlang informed.

The NSCN (R) cadre was dentified as Noksom Tangha, 42 years. A resident of New Sallang village under district PS, he is a self styled revenue incharge of changlang town. No arms and ammunition was recovered other than a motorcycle and one mobile phone from his possession. The cadre was actively involved in extortion racket being carried out by NSCN (R) in Changlang district, SP added.

Accordingly, a case has been registered at Changlang Police Station vide C/No. 23/2020 U/S 384 IPC R/W Sec 10/13 UAP Act.

It is to be noted that district Police under the command of SP Mihin Gambo has been actively involved in combating Corona Virus since the imposition of the national lockdown on March 24. Apart from fighting Corona, the police in Changlang district have been regularly involved in descending the graph of insurgency and drug peddling activities despite a shortage of manpower. Since March, the police successfully captured 19 insurgents and 14 drug peddlers.
